The history of Awantipora

Nestled on the banks of the Jhelum River in Jammu and Kashmir, Awantipora is an ancient town steeped in royal grandeur and architectural brilliance. Founded in the 9th century by King Avantivarman, the illustrious ruler of the Utpala dynasty, it once served as a thriving capital and a grand hub of Kashmiri art and culture. Today, the town is globally renowned for the majestic ruins of the Avantiswami and Avantishvara temples—two monumental stone structures dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva that, despite facing destruction in the 14th century and centuries of burial, were excavated by archaeologists to reveal stunning blends of Gandharan and local architecture. Blending its rich, ancient heritage with modern significance, contemporary Awantipora is home to both a vital Indian Air Force station and the Islamic University of Science and Technology, making it a captivating stop for history buffs and travelers alike.
